What People Are Saying

“I was so impressed with how friendly and welcoming the members were while I was learning how to paddle and after a few weeks, I was hooked.

The club has amazing coaches who are, fun, experienced, and very helpful and the best thing is that you do not have to be super fit. You can start at any age, as there are people of all ages and fitness levels.

If you’re looking to have fun, get fit and be around wonderful people, I highly recommend this club and the sport”.

“Joining Peninsula Dragonflys - Dragon Boat Club in 2011 was one of the best things I’ve ever stepped out of my comfort zone to do. Fitness, friendships, and lots of laughs - the Dragonflys have given me all these things.

Dragon boating is a fast-growing, close-knit community. One thing I love is that when traveling I can always paddle with a local club and feel welcome
.”

“I joined the Dragonflys in 2008 for fitness and friendship. I’ve had so much fun paddling on the Patterson River and at regattas in Victoria and interstate. A highlight of my Dragonflys membership was representing Victoria in 2017 and 2018 at the AusChamps. I plan to continue to paddle with the Dragonflys for as long as I can”.

FAQs

What is Dragonboat Racing?

Dragon boat racing is an aquatic sport in which a 12-meter-long canoe-like boat, wide enough to seat 2 abreast of either 20 or 10 paddlers is paddled over a course, usually 200 or 500 meters in length. In addition to the paddlers, a dragon boat requires a Sweep to steer the boat and a Drummer to beat the time of the stroke (and distract the competition)

Is there an introduction program for new members?

We recognise that there will be a lot of questions when you join, and there’s nothing worse than a sea of new faces and not knowing who is who! Every new member is made to feel welcome and receives onboarding, so that you can understand your team, your committee, and our club processes.

What Social Events are available?

Our Social Committee is very active, organising events throughout the year to ensure that our community is engaged, active, and importantly, having fun!

What is the focus on water safety?

It will come as no surprise that it is a requirement under Victorian Maritime Rules that everyone wears a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) when on the water. We also hold Water Safety Training sessions at least once a year.

How do I get involved in regattas?

In Victoria, the regatta season is generally over the warmer months between August/Sept and April. National and international events are held throughout the year and entry will depend on member’s interest. Examples of events where we’ve competed are: Australian Masters Games, PanPac Games, Malaysia, China, Florida USA, Wellington NZ, Lake Barrington Tasmania, Ord River WA, DAA Darling Harbour, plus others.
